Tips for renting in Marseille
For skippered boats and full-day Calanques trips, book at least a week ahead in peak season (June–September). July and August weekends fill up fast, even for licence-free craft.
Licence-free boats (under 6 hp) are the most accessible option: valid ID, a credit-card deposit, a quick pontoon briefing, and you're off. For more powerful vessels, a coastal boating licence is mandatory and will be checked before departure.
Check what the rate includes: fuel (often extra), safety equipment, snorkelling masks, cooler. Serious providers supply a full kit; others charge for add-ons. Ask for a detailed quote to avoid surprises on return.
The mistral can pick up quickly and make navigation uncomfortable or even dangerous for small boats. Experienced operators advise on the day's conditions and may cancel at no charge in strong wind. Prefer calm mornings for Calanques trips.
For a private event (stag or hen party, birthday, seminar), several providers offer all-inclusive packages with skipper, drinks, swimming stops in the calanques and sometimes on-board catering. Book several weeks ahead and specify the exact guest count.
