Tips for renting in Montpellier
The historic centre of Montpellier is largely pedestrianised and flat, making cycling effortless. Stick to the dedicated lanes along the Lez river to reach the southern neighbourhoods without mixing with car traffic.
The Lez greenway connects downtown to the beaches at Palavas-les-Flots via a shaded, signposted route. It takes roughly forty minutes at a leisurely pace. In summer, set off early in the morning to beat the heat and the weekend crowds.
For more ambitious riders, the road to Pic Saint-Loup climbs gradually through garrigue scrubland and Languedoc vineyards over about forty kilometres. Carry plenty of water, especially between June and September, as refill points are scarce outside built-up areas.
The Vélomagg bike-share system, run by TaM, provides convenient docking stations across the city for quick urban hops. For longer outings or specialised bikes, independent rental shops such as Le Criquet de Talus offer personalised service and a wider selection of models including e-bikes.
